STUDENT CLUB (Manitou Students Only): Video Club

Mondays 3:15 – 4:30pm 
Available to Middle Schoolers

The Manitou Video Club is a chance for middle school students to learn and enhance their video production skills and offer their unique perspective while learning techniques for shooting videos, camera angles, visual composition, creating shot lists, and editing in iMovie and Canva. Led by film and content creator Mr. James, this club will be creating video content reflective of student ideas and experiences. This club is open to all students comfortable on either side of the camera and with or without experience. Students will need to bring an Apple device to participate (however we can assist with other arrangements if this is not possible).

NOTE: Devices brought from home MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL DAY. There will be a bin on the desk for them to be stored during the school day. Generally, it is school policy to NOT allow personal technology devices such as cell phones, tablets, fitbits, and wearables. We are making an exception to that rule for this special school club, and we require participating students to keep their devices in the office during the school day.

Magical Sprouts – NEW

Available to students ages 4-8 

Mx. Wade will lead students into the magic world of growing food and finding magic in the garden. Students will learn about native plants, pollinator pathways, composting, make sustainable garden art, and help create a garden that will produce food and habitat. This class will be a fun opportunity to build self esteem, teamwork skills, and gross and fine motor skills while fostering responsibility for our environment. This class will overlap for 15 minutes with the Let’s Build a Garden class to allow students involved in these classes to work together for a period of time and share daily garden tasks. $220 / 11-week session

Let’s Make a Garden at Manitou! – NEW

Mondays @ 4:15 – 5:30pm 

Available to students ages 9+ 

The students involved in this class will work on expanding and creating new gardens at Manitou. Students learn by doing the hands-on work of growing and building while observing the evolution of these agricultural spaces and innovating and problem solving as we go. Mx. Wade will work with students on creating sustainable gardening spaces for growing food and nourishing our ecosystem. There will be a 15 minute overlap between this class and Magical Sprouts so that older students can take their leadership skills to the next level by helping to facilitate daily garden tasks with younger students maximizing the mixed age experience.

Dungeons & Dragons – FULL 

Mondays @ 3:15 – 5:30pm 

Available to students ages 9+ 

Join beloved teacher and experienced Dungeon Master, Mr. Conor, for Dungeons and Dragons. D&D is a collaborative, role-playing, storytelling game in which players take on the role of a character and explore fantasy worlds together while embarking on quests and leveling up in experience. This interactive game helps players build social-emotional skills, grow confidence, express their creativity, and connect with peers. No experience is needed to join the adventure.

Available to students ages 5-8 

Beloved teacher and former professional soccer player Mr. Anthony will be teaching this fun class for our younger soccer players. This class will cover concepts, techniques, and gameplay while improving coordination and balance, endurance, teamwork, strategic thinking, muscle and bone strength, all while having fun. A great class for active kids and those who need a high level of engagement to get physically active! Please make sure children come to class with sneakers and an outfit they are comfortable to run around in. Students will have time between dismissal and the start of class to eat a snack and change if needed.

Soccer Skills and Drills

Available to students ages 9+ 

Beloved teacher and former professional soccer player Mr. Anthony will teach this fun class for students who want to focus on skill development through gameplay. The drills and games facilitated in this class are used in professional soccer training internationally. Additionally this class promotes fitness, cognitive development, social skills, and self-confidence while instilling respect, responsibility, and sportsmanship. Participating children need to come with sneakers, shin guards, and an outfit they are comfortable to run around in.

This class is great for students that are new to soccer and kids who already play and would enjoy the benefits of extra skill development.

Drawing From Real Life – NEW

Available to students ages 5-10 

Local artist Christina Di Marco will lead students in exploration and experimentation with many media focusing on objects and each other! In inviting weather, the class will go outside and utilize our beautiful Manitou campus for inspiration and as an outdoor studio space. Come join the fun and create!

STUDENT CLUB: Girls on the Run

Mondays and Thursdays @ 3:15 – 4:30 pm
Available to students in 3rd-5th grades (Ages 8-11)

Ms. Allie and Ms. Nicole are coaching Manitou’s own and popular Girls on the Run Team!

Girls on the Run is a social and emotional wellness program for girls that teaches life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a non-competitive celebratory 5K (3.1 mile) event. The program is open to 3rd-5th grades who identify as female or non-binary.

$175 Program Registration Fee with Girls on the Run Includes:

  • GOTR cinch bag, journal, t-shirt & water bottle
  • 8 weeks / 16 lessons delivered by certified coaches
  • Celebratory 5K event

Capoeira 

Group 1: Tuesdays @ 3:15 – 4:00pm | Ages 3-6
Group 2: Tuesdays @ 4:15 – 5:15pm | Ages 7+ 

Led by the lively Rafael Teixeira, capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, and acrobatics. It teaches discipline, self-defense, physical fitness, and promotes self-esteem. It is considered one of the top all-around strength, flexibility, and aerobic exercises. Students will learn about all facets of this beautiful martial art: history, games, dance, drums, and more. Please dress children in white shirts and pants for class. Students will work towards having a performance at the end of the session.

Manitou Choir is taught by the beloved former Manitou music teacher, Linda Richards. Due to the immense popularity of the choir, Ms. Linda is running two choirs this year on Tuesdays. Students can only be in ONE of these choirs. 

The winter/spring season will culminate in a performance at the Manitou Spring Concert. It meets on Tuesday afternoons from January through June.

Students who were in the Fall/Winter choir session will be automatically registered for the Winter/Spring session unless they tell us that they are making different plans. Email aftercare@manitouschool.org.

 

Choir B (Available to students ages 4th-8th grades)

This is the “specialized Manitou choir”. The students in this choir have to be in 4th grade and up and will be working on a lot of HARMONIES along with some more challenging songs! This group, along with Choir A will sing together at an evening performance for family and friends.

Choir A (Available to students ages 8+)

This is the “general Manitou choir” – any student from 8 years and up can be part of this singing group! Singers will learn fun songs to sing in unison. This group, along with Choir B will sing together at an evening performance for family and friends.

In this class taught by Manitou’s own dynamic Ms. Scherrie, students will read stories and participate in an art activity inspired by the story. Specially curated tales will spark creativity, broaden students’ worldview, and help develop your child’s love of language. Pairing an art activity with a story enhances social skills, motor skills, problem solving skills, language and literacy skills while having fun.

Manitou Spanish teacher Ms. Erica believes play and fun are essential components in a successful learning process. Ms. Erica developed this fun and dynamic class to help children learn the concepts of language through games, stories, and craft activities. Each class will have a theme and will introduce children to vocabulary, verbs, pronouns, articles, and more. Perfect for beginners and those who have had some exposure and would like to learn more!

Instructor Mr. Rudolf’s love of chess is contagious! Rudolf van Dommele is an experienced chess player and teacher. This chess class is a great way to learn the game or advance your level of play. Learning chess develops problem-solving skills, creative thinking, strategic planning, pattern recognition, and memorization skills while teaching sportsmanship and building self-confidence at the same time.

Empathy Through Improv

Wednesdays @ 3:15 – 4:30pm
Available to students ages 9+ 

Improv is an excellent tool to help children build communication skills, social skills, and think creatively. Mr. Alexander brings his expertise and playful energy in teaching improv and comedy to our students through this workshop that uses improv games, techniques, and mantras to explore personal truths and have fun. Students will develop stage presence and storytelling instincts with an underlying theme of mindfulness and empathy. Each session will designate a portion of time for discussion and a portion of time for playing/performing with each other.

Teaching artist Donna Mikkelsen is creating a time and space for budding artists who would like to spend more time in the studio creating their own individual and collaborative art pieces. Students will be invited to utilize different media and techniques to express their ideas through art. This class will support students in building their creative capacity, innovation, and problem-solving skills.

Thursdays @ 3:15 – 4:00pm
Available to Middle School Students

We are so excited to introduce this new Middle School Club taught by Laura Leigh Abby, a writer, podcast host, mom of two, and a small business owner here in the Hudson Valley. During this class students will develop, write and record a podcast. Students will learn how to write for audio, conduct and record interviews, and create their own podcast. Creative freedom will lead the way, so students can choose to create a podcast together as a group, or work individually if they have their own ideas. They can then share their podcast with family and friends. Students are encouraged to bring their laptop and/or iphone if they have one.

Each class session will focus on the preparation of different Latin American food all facilitated in Spanish. Horsemanship & Riding For Beginners

We are so excited to partner with Stonewall Stables again to offer this exceptional program. The beautiful outdoor facility is located just a few miles from school. The Stonewall Stables staff is dedicated to ensuring a safe space for the physical, emotional and educational growth of their students. The curriculum is designed to learn many aspects of riding through patterns and games while building teamwork and social skills with peers and the herd.

Students will learn the essentials including horse care, handling, feeding, grooming, bathing and upkeep in a farm setting.

NOTE: Transportation from the school to the stables is NOT provided and must be arranged separately.

“The Love Club” – NEW 

Group 1: Fridays @ 3:15 – 4:00pm | Ages 3-6
Group 2: Fridays @ 4:15 – 5:15pm | Ages 7+ 

Everything shifts when we feel and spread love. Guided by the children’s ideas on ways they would like to expand love, facilitator Shira Newmark will co-create activities within our school, at home, and across our local community. As a group, students will explore through mindfulness techniques and the creative arts to practice warm heartedness and compassion for ourselves, one another and our world. Through these practices children will learn self-regulation methods to potentially neutralize symptoms of anxiety, anger, emotional swings, and social phobias while also supporting focus and motivation. There are myriad benefits to the power of spreading love together. Let’s galvanize a ripple effect with our children to amplify love all the more.

Occupational Therapy Groups (Before and During School)

Handwriting Class

Tuesdays @ 8:00-8:30am
Available to students ages 7-10

Seeking to improve your child’s handwriting skills? Our handwriting class uses Handwriting Without Tears and is run by licensed occupational therapist Lacey Straub, who will work with your child to improve their handwriting skills. These small interactive classes will focus on improving letter formation, sizing, spacing and placement of letters in a fun and creative way to improve neatness and legibility of writing. The OT will also work with parents to support generalization of these skills at home.

$160/8 weeks

Movement & Art Class (Stepping Stones)

Tuesdays @ 11:00-11:30am
Available to students ages 3-4

These small group classes are run by a licensed occupational therapist Sophie Kinnarney, who will work on improving your child’s strength, endurance and flexibility. There are many benefits to improving your child’s core strength including better sitting/attention in the classroom, improved motor planning and body awareness in motor play, better balance/coordination and overall self-confidence. Children will participate in activities including yoga, obstacle course and therapeutic exercises.  This class will be held during the school day to allow children a movement break and work on these skills.  

$160/8 weeks

Each art class focuses on an age appropriate activity that will build fine motor skills, improve sensory integration and foster creativity. Children will be encouraged to use a wide range of materials including paint, clay, crayons, sand and other textures. Each week children will engage and participate in multi-step activities to promote self-confidence, independence and imagination.

*If Manitou or the individual is able to recruit a replacement for their spot in class/program, a full refund will be distributed with a $25 processing fee.

In addition, 

  1. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund or enrichment class credit.
  2. Cancellations initiated by the participant must be requested a minimum of 7 days prior to the start of the class. This request must be made in writing to the enrichment/program coordinator.
  3. These policies will apply to all enrichment-based programs at the Manitou School, unless stated otherwise in the program description and or informational/promotional materials. We understand there may be special situations that need extra consideration, and we attempt to accommodate everyone fairly and evaluate these situations on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the program’s director.
