The Name “Manitou”
The Manitou School got its start in a little red cottage on Old Manitou Road in the hamlet of Garrison, New York. The lush, green community overlooking the majestic Hudson River is a place where Algonquian peoples once lived. In their language, “Manitou” is a special word for the innate spirit they believed could be found in everything—from plants to stones to people. The name of our school, inspired by this concept, nurtures and respects the unique spirit within each child.
