Enrichment Programs

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are not holding Enrichment Classes at this time, and we will not be holding Summer Programs during the 2021 Summer.  Check back soon for Updates! 

Learning happens everywhere.

Before school, after school, during the summers – these are excellent opportunities for enrichment.

Our Enrichment classes are open to the community.  We welcome all learners to join the fun!  Below is a sample of typical Enrichment Classes we offer.

TYPICAL ON-GOING PROGRAMS (Fall, Winter & Spring)

SOCIAL TOTS (FREE)

Tuesdays from 8:45am – 9:45am

Drop off the big kids at school and join us for some tot time! Children up to 3 years old are welcome with their parent or caregiver to come to the Manitou School Gym to play and socialize. This is also a great way for parents to get out of the house and meet other parents. Days with good weather we will meet in the playground and enjoy the outdoors!

 

GO NO SEN KARATE at The Manitou School

The Manitou School will continue to offer Karate to our community by our partnership with Go No Sen Karate. Karate is an amazing way to help kids channel their energy in a sport that is focused on the whole child. Physical activity paired with discipline and structure provides a great way for kids to focus their energy as well as stay fit.

$240 / 8 week session *Uniforms must be purchased prior to start of class.

Tuesday: Advanced Orange Belts or Higher / Sparring

(Must have taken previous six sessions at Manitou or at Go No Sen)

3:30pm – 4:15pm

Tuesday: Elite Training

   This enrichment class will offer advanced training while introducing new elements such as: sparring, weapons training, etc.  Kids will not want to miss out on this class as it will help get them closer to their next belt upgrade.(Must be enrolled in Tuesday class in order to take this class)

4:15pm – 4:45pm

Friday: Beginners ages 5+ and Intermediate

3:30pm – 4:15pm

MONDAYS

SCIENCE EXPLORERS: ENGINEERING!

Available to students ages 6-9yrs

Coming up with new ideas is hard! How do engineers design new things or improve existing ones? Engineers and inventors use different brainstorming techniques to help them think outside the box and come up with new ideas. Students will experiment with interactive projects like rubber band helicopters, catapults, egg drop projects and rockets! Ms. Johanna will guide the kids while always asking, imagining, planing, creating, and improving!

$180 / 8 week session 

 

BILINGUAL BIRDIES

Available to students ages 3-6yrs

Ms. Nubia will be engaging niños in Spanish through music and song! Rhymes and storytelling, exploratory games and movement for heightened student engagement and fun!

KIDS KNIT
Available to students ages 7+ up

Ms. Pat has been knitting for 10 years and believes knitting is a great way to encourage children’s creativity and concentration. In these classes kids will learn to knit a purl stitch and create a cozy scarf. For those who have some experience come to learn knitting in the round plus finishing techniques. Knitting is relaxing and uses both sides of the brain. Best of all you’ll have a lovely scarf or hat.

CIRCUS ACROBATICS / w/ AERIAL

Available to students grades 1st-4th

Aerial, Acrobatics, Circus Games and Manipulatives.  This class will be a mixed level offering of a variety of circus arts!

$160 /6 week session/ 3:30-4:30pm

 

AERIAL ARTS

Available to students grades 3+up

This is for the student who just wants to be in the air. This class includes a warm up,  and lots of time on Aerial Silks and Aerial Lyra!

$160 /6 week session/ 4:30-5:30pm

 

ADULT AERIAL CLASS 

Available to 16+

Come get a full body workout in a fun and interesting class!  We start with yoga to warm up, stretch, and condition. We continue with an aerial workout. This includes climbs, inversions(going upside down), aerial dance and aerial acrobatic skills.  This is a beginner to advanced beginner level class. Class progresses at the students pace. No experience necessary. 

6 weeks/ 5:30-6:30/ $20 Drop In Fee (Register by 1pm Day of Class)

KIDS CLAY CREATIONS- NEW!

Available for ages 5-9 yrs

Learn the fundamentals of creating in clay. Learn new clay techniques like hand building, slab construction, coiling, sculpture and working on a wheel. Take your pottery art to the next level. This is a great class for all levels of experience. 

$170/8 week session/3:30-4:30pm

 

CAMERA OBSCURA- Art & Optics!- NEW!

Available for ages 10-14 years

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be inside of a working camera? Here’s your chance to explore the exciting world of optics in art with a room-sized Camera Obscura! From Leonardo Da Vinci’s first studies of the human eye to the Hubble Space Telescope, lenses have shaped our view of the world and beyond. Students will build their own pinhole cameras, sketch from life using a lens as a guide and learn about optical art through the ages with Mr. Dan. 

$135/6 week/3:30-4:30pm

 

USA WRESTLING

Available to students ages 5-14 yrs

Wrestling is a sport which relies on individual strength, agility, and mental toughness.  The program will meet once weekly to start and will introduce the USA Wrestling Core Curriculum.  The program is designed for kids K-8th grade and no experience is required. Boys and girls are welcome to participate.  Try to recruit a friend! You do not need to live locally to participate. Instruction will be provided by Cold Spring resident, Tommy Hendrix.  A Hudson Valley native, Tommy was a four year letter winner on West Point’s NCAA Division I wrestling team and National Champion team member at Blair Academy

Meetings will be held at the Manitou School Barn in Cold Spring.

WEDNESDAYS

CAPOEIRA JR!

(Available to students ages 3-6)

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Students will learn about all facets of this beautiful martial art: history, games, dance, drums and more. Led by lively Rafael Cabecao, children will learn to move their bodies in a new way while playing and learning about the environment this art form was raised from. Please dress children in white shirts and pants for class. We will work towards having a performance at the end of the session.

$180 / 6 week session / 3:30pm – 4:30pm

CREATIVE IMMERSION SPANISH
Available to students ages 5-8 yrs

This fun and dynamic class led by the playful Ms. Erica will help children learn the concepts of language through games, stories and craft activities. Each class will have a theme and will introduce children to vocabulary, verbs, pronouns, articles and more. Perfect for beginners and those who have had some exposure and would like to learn more!

$160/8 week session/ 3:30-4:30

 

WEE CHEFS

Available to students ages 3-5 yrs

The Wee Chefs course will incorporate basic food preparation skills, measuring and safety in the kitchen and the opportunity to learn easy and fun treats that can be made at home. Recipes will be hands on sensory learning and delicious to boot! At the end of each class, the Wee Chefs will enjoy their own tasty hand-made treats. Lead by Chef Nancy Bayer, this class is sure to please even the pickiest of palettes.

$175/ 8 week session/ 3:30-4:30pm

 

PLAY CHESS!
Available to students ages 5-14 yrs


Our chess classes focus on having fun and allow students to develop important skills that they can apply to other areas of their life. Chess is a mentally rewarding game of skill that enhances cognitive development in children while providing a stimulating challenge.

$170/ 8 week session/ NOTE: Two different class times and ages
3:30-4:30pm(Ages 5-8) or 4:30-5:30pm(Ages 9-14)

 

HORSEMANSHIP & RIDING LESSONS- LIMITED SPACE- CLASS FULL
Available to grades K-8th

We are so excited to partner with Stonewall Stables again to offer this exceptional program. The beautiful outdoor facility is located just a few miles from school. The Stonewall Stables staff is dedicated to ensuring a safe space for the physical, emotional and educational growth of their students. The curriculum is designed to learn many aspects of riding through patterns and games while building teamwork and social skills with peers and the herd. Students will learn the essentials including horse care, handling, feeding, grooming, bathing and upkeep in a farm setting.
This class is rewarding, challenging and unforgettable! 

$450/ 8 week session /Two groups: 3:30-4:30pm or 4:45-5:45pm

 

THURSDAYS

COMIC DESIGN

Available for grades 1st-3rd

Comics are a form of storytelling, like song, film, or short story. In Mr. Adam’s words, there’s more to comics than superheroes. Comics are an integration of images and words, visual art and storytelling. For the Illustrator/storyteller, the pencil is the tool of choice. Students will conceive and draw comics the traditional way. First sketching in non-repro blue pencil, then clean-ups, inking with marker on white card stock and finally coloring with watercolor.  

$175/ 8 week session / 3:30-4:30pm 

 

GROW A GARDEN!- NEW! 
Available to grades 2nd + up

This Class will take the students from germination to leaf. Miss Jennet will guide students in learning the science and harmony of soil, water, air, light requirements etc. This will include a counter-hydroponic session, hands-on planting using heat mats and grow-bulbs and planting a take-home garden.
Other aspects covered:  Companion planting, hybrids or heirlooms, planting traditions and folklore, attracting beneficials, early and late season vegetables, vermicompost.

TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD- NEW!

Available to ages 3-6 yrs

Young storytellers will learn to tell their tales through artistic expression. This class will help children narrate their own tales through many mediums. This sensory experience will help children convey their narratives in new and creative ways. Taught by Miss Jackie, kids will bring home some stories for the whole family to enjoy.

$175/ 8 week session/ 3:30-4:30pm

ENGINEERING ADVENTURES… with LEGO® BRICKS!

Do you want to be an engineer or an architect? This is your chance! Join us as we put our engineering skills to the test to build bridges, buildings, vehicles and more… all out of LEGO® Bricks! Each week will offer a different step-by-step build, along with time for LEGO® free play. Together we’ll learn and play, and explore different types of career opportunities.

KAYAKING EXPEDITIONS- LIMITED SPACE
(Available to grades 4+up)

This month-long series of classes gets your kids outdoors and on the water. The Hudson Highlands Expedition team has highly experienced, ACA-certified kayak and paddleboard instructors who will use play-based instruction methods to teach kayaking skills, safety, and environmental stewardship. We will use games and team-building strategies to create a fun and safe environment. Our experienced, certified instructor will work on basic strokes, safety, and rescue skills.

$300/4 week session/3:45-5:45pm

MANITOU SCHOOL AFTER CARE  

(M-F) 3pm – 5:30pm (Form link for details and fee structure)

The Manitou School offers after care services to students currently enrolled at Manitou. The After Care Program allows time for children to have free play as well as time to read, create art, and do homework. There is no After Care on Fridays. Please provide your child with a nut-free healthy snack every day they are attending an afternoon enrichment class or aftercare. Snack must be in a separate clearly marked container. Snacks are not provided by the school.

* Please make sure you pick up by 5:30pm, an additional $30 late fee will apply for pick-ups after 5:30pm

PARENT BOOK CLUB

What exactly is a “progressive education” anyway?

This is a group for anyone who wants to read about and discuss schooling, modern science about children, human nature and psychology, and the challenges of raising children today. Selections may include books about the history of schools, recent research about preschool-aged children, sex education, the nuances of raising children within one gender or another, and more! Reading suggestions welcome. We are committed to selecting only books that are approachable and either short or available in an audio format.

*If Manitou or the individual is able to recruit a replacement for their spot in class/program, a full refund will be distributed with a $25 processing fee.

In addition, 

  1. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund or enrichment class credit.
  2. Cancellations initiated by the participant must be requested a minimum of 7 days prior to the start of the class. This request must be made in writing to the enrichment/program coordinator.
  3. These policies will apply to all enrichment-based programs at the Manitou School, unless stated otherwise in the program description and or informational/promotional materials. We understand there may be special situations that need extra consideration, and we attempt to accommodate everyone fairly and evaluate these situations on a case-by-case basis.
