The Odyssey is a thrilling story of adventure, combat with mythical beasts and longing for home and family that has inspired writers, visual artists, and theater artists for millennia. The children will encounter the tale through an authentic text, the acclaimed Robert Fagles translation, and images from centuries of visual art. Through improvisation, ensemble work, and collaborative theater games the children learn to bring the strong poetry of the text to life. We will focus on Odysseus’ encounter with the Cyclops. The children will learn to direct each other in scene work, and use video for self-assessment in the rehearsal process.  We’re excited to have Veteran theater teacher, actor and storyteller Ronald Sopyla will lead the children through this exploration. What exactly is a “progressive education” anyway?

This is a group for anyone who wants to read about and discuss schooling, modern science about children, human nature and psychology, and the challenges of raising children today. Selections may include books about the history of schools, recent research about preschool-aged children, sex education, the nuances of raising children within one gender or another, and more! Reading suggestions welcome. We are committed to selecting only books that are approachable and either short or available in an audio format.
Contact Amie@manitouschool.org with the subject line “parent book club” for the survey which will decide when and how often to meet, and what book to start with. Open to the wider community of parents and educators.
