Enrichment Programs

Learning happens everywhere. Before school, after school, during the summers – these are excellent opportunities for enrichment.

Our Enrichment classes are open to the community.  We welcome all learners to join the fun!

2017 SPRING AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT

 

ON-GOING PROGRAMS (Fall, Winter & Spring)

MANITOU SCHOOL AFTER CARE 

(M-Th) 3pm – 5pm,  $10/day for a 3:10-3:30 pick up, $20/day for pick up between 3:30-5pm

The Manitou School offers after care services to students currently enrolled at Manitou. The After Care Program allows time for children to have free play as well as time to read, create art, and do homework. There is no After Care on Fridays. Please provide your child a nut-free healthy snack every day they are attending an afternoon enrichment class or aftercare. Snack must be in a separate clearly marked container. Snacks are not provided by the school.

* Please make sure you pick up by 5pm, an additional $20 late fee will apply for pick ups after 5pm.

 

SOCIAL TOTS (FREE)

Tuesdays from 8:45am – 9:45am

Drop off the big kids at school and join us for some tot time! Children up to 3yo are welcome with their parent or caregiver to come to the Manitou School Gym and play and socialize. This is also a great way for parents to get out of the house and meet other parents. Days with good weather we will meet in the playground and enjoy the outdoors!

No Fee.

 

GO NO SEN KARATE at The Manitou School

We are proud of our partnership with Go No Sen Karate. The Manitou School will continue to offer Karate to our community.  Karate is an amazing way to help kids channel their energy in a sport that is focused on the whole child. Physical activity paired with discipline and structure provides a great way for kids to focus their energy as well as stay fit.

$240 / 8 week session  *Uniforms must be purchased prior to start of class.

Tuesday: Advanced Orange Belts or Higher  (Must have taken previous six sessions at Manitou or at Go No Sen)

3:30pm – 4:15pm

Wednesday: Beginners ages 5+ and Intermediate

3:30pm – 4:15pm

Friday – Elite Training (Must be enrolled in Tuesday class in order to take this class)

This enrichment class will offer advanced training while introducing new elements such as: sparring, weapons training, etc.  Kids will not want to miss out on this class as it will help get them closer to their next belt upgrade.

SPRING 2017: MONDAYS

PARLEZ ET JOUEZ EN FRANCAIS PART 2!
Available to students age 4 +

Explore the French language through fun games and songs. Understanding French can also be an entry point for interests in fashion, culinary arts, theater, dance, visual arts, and architecture. Lead by the tres sympathique Claire Peage, this is a great way to introduce your child to French or continue their interest in the language.

$160 / 8 week session / Mondays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm

BOYS ROCK
Available to students age 10 +

Explore various musical styles/instruments and learn to collaborate with bandmates to create your own songs and compositions. Led by the fearless Chris Faroe, this is a great way to continue your big kid’s interesting in music as well as provide a path into exploring specific musical instruments.

$160 / 8 week session / Monday 3:30pm – 4:30pm.

CAPOEIRA!
Available to students age 6 +

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Students will learn the about all facets of this beautiful martial art: history, games, dance, drums and more. Led by Rafael Cabecao (who some of you will remember from our Carnival), children will learn to move their bodies in a new way while playing and learning about the environment this art form was raised from. Children must wear white shirts and pants for class. We will work towards having a performance at the end of the session.

STORYBOOK YOGA FOR PRESCHOOLERS
Available to students ages 3 – 4

This class combines storytelling, stretching, and imaginative movement during the cold winter months. Little ones playfully act out storybook characters through yoga, sound, and breath. Taught by the ever-Zen Brenda Perry.

MANITOU JAM PT 2!
Available to students age 9+ 

Manitou Jam session is a unique opportunity to get together for the enjoyment of playing music in a group setting.  Jam sessions will enable kids to practice their craft and will include a combination of instruments / vocals at all levels. Everyone will be able to participate. Each session will be lead by the always rocking Chris Faroe.

$160 / 8 week session /

ART & SCIENCE FOR PRESCHOOLERS!
Available to students ages 3 – 4

Young children have fun while engaging in simple art & science projects designed for toddlers and early childhood. Activities such as creating giant homemade bubbles, making ice-salt-watercolor art, creating sun prints with shadows and light, learning how mirrors work, and partaking in a color laboratory with bubbles and color mixing are a few of the various projects covered.  Taught by the colorful and curious Brenda Perry.

THE HOUSE THAT MANITOU BUILT PART 2
Available to students age 8 +

Similar to minecraft but WAY better! Children will learn to collaborate, design, plan, build and finish a small play house from scratch. Kids will see the value of working together and building something from the ground up! The finished structure will stay on the Manitou playground for everyone to admire and enjoy. Taught by the ever handy Hector Sburlati, this class is a great way to disconnect kids from online worlds into building real world connections.

CREATE YOUR OWN WEB PAGE
Available to students age 10+

Children will learn how to create their own web page without any prior knowledge of HTML/CSS or development. Students will be able to construct a functioning one page website complete with images, links, and proper layout. Taught by the very technical Michael DeSalvo, the class is a safe and secure way for kids to have fun learning how to make their own web presence.

*Typing skills are not necessary but helpful

SPEAK AND PLAY IN JAPANESE!

Available to students age 4+

Students will love playing, making crafts, and singing all while being taught and encouraged to speak Japanese. The lovely and vocal Ms. Sakura will lead this group in games, art projects, songs and more while teaching the basics of the Japanese language. This is a great class for families who speak Japanese in the home or those students interested in a new language and culture. Taught by the always incredible Sakura Ozaki!

THE SELF PORTRAIT
Available to students age 5+

We will explore the concept of “self portrait” using many art mediums including dance and the written word. We will use mirrors, photographs, and age appropriate literature to affectionately discuss physical differences including skin color, hair texture, and body shape. We will look at examples of classic art highlighting and celebrating diverse features. We will discuss how to show our innermost personalities when creating self portraits, and imagine abstract versions of ourselves that just “feel” like us. Every-body is beautiful! We’re on the road to self discovery through artistic expression! Taught by the artistically gifted Amie Anderson

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL SKILLS
Available to students Age 7 +

Spring is an excellent time observe the changes in animal activity and hone our awareness skills. Learn more about wilderness skills as we take advantage of the changes that Spring brings to the outdoors. Taught by our own outdoor warrior, Kim Chase.

THEATER IN OUR WORLD PART 2
Available to students Age 5 to 8 

The class will be transforming their favorite books into living worlds on stage. Students will experience the entire theatrical process including writing, auditioning,rehearsing and performing. Taught by Bill Coelius, a professional actor who is active in film, TV and theater. He has over 20 years experience working with young children and educational theater.

GROUP GUITAR
Available to students age 8 to 12 

Learn beginner guitar! Guitar parts, tablature, chords, and simple melodies will be explored in this beginner guitar class. Manitou will supply the guitars ( 3/4 size and steel stringed, perfect size for kids).  Taught by the mellifluous Linda Richards, children will begin a lifelong love for 6 strings!

INVENTORS: A MINI-MAKERS PROGRAM PART 2
Available to students age 5 to 8 

Learn about a new inventor or invention every week and create your own unique inventions. This fun and educational class will teach children about innovation, thinking beyond the box and applying their imagination to creating special works of engineering, art, and product design. Using recycled materials as well as some special gadgets, children will be able to use their fine motor skills to help bring their imagination to life. Taught by the awesome Johanna Reinhardt.
